About ShedSafe
The ShedSafe program began to take form in the aftermath of Cyclone Larry in 2006. The devastation included many supposedly storm-proof sheds prompting Government Regulators to investigate compliance within the shed building industry. It quickly became clear that shed failures were an issue across Australia and action needed to be taken.
In response to Regulator requests, the Australian Steel Institute (ASI) published a design guide for portal frame steel sheds and garages in 2008, outlining the correct application of the Building Code of Australia (BCA) for steel sheds. Shed Sellers and Shed Manufacturers must demonstrate compliance with the design guide in order to achieve ShedSafe accreditation.
ShedSafe and Your New Shed
So, what does ShedSafe accreditation mean for you as a customer? Put simply, when you buy a shed from a ShedSafe accredited supplier, you will receive a BCA compliant shed that will withstand the weather conditions for which it has been designed. The program is two-tiered meaning that both shed manufacturers and suppliers are accountable. Shed Manufacturers undergo a review by an independent third party to confirm that their shed designs are in accordance with the ASI design guide, while the shed seller must complete training so they can recommend site-appropriate designs that are fit for purpose.
